Massachusetts Senate Unanimously Prioritizes Climate Adaptation (PRESS RELEASE)

JUNE 25, 2024: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BOSTON, MA—During today’s formal session, the Massachusetts Senate voted on its comprehensive 96-page Climate Omnibus Bill. This bill included 122 amendments addressing a range of issues, highlighting the state's dedication to remaining a climate leader. Notably, the Senate unanimously adopted CRWA’s priority amendment, Statewide Flood Risk Assessment and Standards, filed by Senator Marc Pacheco. Additionally, the Senate approved Senator Jamie Eldridge’s Drought Management amendment, supported by CRWA and its allies.

Climate change is bringing more severe storms to our watershed, putting our critical infrastructure at risk. Amendment #113  Statewide Flood Risk Assessment and Standards, sponsored by Senator Marc Pacheco, will provide flood risk mapping resources to the public.

“With climate change emerging as a reality, not a future prospect, flood risk is a phenomenon across the state. This amendment directs the Secretary of Environmental Affairs to take stock of our flood risk and provide recommendations as to how we can measure it and get our arms around it.” - Senator William Brownsberger

Climate change is causing more frequent, long-lasting, and severe droughts. Amendment #30, Drought Management, filed by Senator Jamie Eldridge, will create a statewide, coordinated drought management plan.

"This amendment is a significant step forward in our climate adaptation preparedness efforts." - Senator Jamie Eldridge

Together, these amendments respond to the intersecting threats of climate change and environmental injustice––offering solutions to protect our communities from drought and flooding while restoring a healthy ecosystem. Learn more about these priorities at CRWA’s Advocacy Center
